NPO Highlight: Flock Cancer Idaho

Breast cancer is a battle that no one should have to fight alone. Flock Cancer Idaho, a nonprofit organization, has taken up the mantle to ensure that survivors, fighters, and their families in the Treasure Valley have a community of support. Founded on the principles of hope, resilience, and celebration, Flock Cancer Idaho is dedicated to raising awareness, funding vital cancer support programs, and creating an impactful, supportive environment for those affected by breast cancer.

At the heart of Flock Cancer Idaho is its mission: to honor and celebrate breast cancer survivors, fighters, and their families. Each year, the organization hosts the **Flock Cancer Street Stroll**, a vibrant and empowering event designed to bring the community together in celebration of life, while also raising awareness and funds for critical cancer support programs. This commitment ensures that no one in the Treasure Valley battles breast cancer in isolation.

Flock Cancer Idaho seeks to be a leading source of information, resources, and encouragement for anyone affected by breast cancer. By raising funds, they help provide essential services to local cancer support programs, such as the Boise YMCA Oncology Recovery Program, while also creating a safe space for survivors to share their stories and celebrate their journey.

Flock Cancer Idaho's commitment to the Treasure Valley community can be seen in the impact they've made in just a few short years. Their journey began in 2021, after breast cancer survivor mother-daughter duo, Leslie Scantling and Barbara Rhoades, launched the organization in response to the Komen Foundation ceasing its Boise event. Determined to continue the tradition of gathering survivors and supporters, they organized the first Flock Cancer Street Stroll.

The Flock Cancer Street Stroll is more than just a fundraiser—it's a celebration of life, survivorship, and community. Held annually along Boise’s historic Harrison Boulevard, the event is a pink flamingo-themed celebration that encourages participants to stroll a loop while enjoying cheering sections, decorated homes, and heartfelt community support.

At the event's heart is the beloved pink flamingo theme. Franz Witte, a local garden center, has donated its iconic flamingo flock to adorn Leslie's front yard for the occasion, continuing a tradition that celebrates her own cancer journey. Participants also have the opportunity to ring the pink bell as they walk through a festive balloon arch—a symbolic and emotional moment marking their strength and resilience.

The Street Stroll concludes with the “Flock Party”, where participants come together to celebrate with pictures, food, and a joyful pink atmosphere. It’s an event filled with laughter, hugs, and the reminder that no one fights breast cancer alone.
